Meteor Fireball Over Central Spain On July 2nd - 03 Jul 2021
On 2 July 2021, at about 23:49h local time, a slow-moving fireball was
spotted over the center of Spain. This bolide was generated by a rock
from a comet that hit the atmosphere at about 72,000 km / h. The fireball
overflew the province of Cuenca (region of Castilla-La Mancha).
It began over that province at an altitude of about 91 km, and ended at a
height of around 41 km. This bright meteor was recorded in the framework
of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network
(SWEMN), from the meteor-observing stations located at Sevilla, La Hita
(Toledo), La Sagra (Granada), Calar Alto (Almería) ), Cerro Negro
(Seville), Sierra Nevada (Granada), and Madrid (Jaime Izquierdo,
Complutense University of Madrid).

METEOR FIREBALL EXPLODES OVER TAIWAN - 07 Jul 2021
Dozens of spectacular videos surfaced on social media Wednesday (July 7)
after a meteor blasted through the atmosphere over Taiwan.
Shortly after 12:02 a.m. on Wednesday, the Lulin Observatory, located at
the summit of Lulin Mountain in Nantou County's Xinyi Township, recorded
a meteor erupting into a ball of fire as it burst through the atmosphere.
Within a span of 50 seconds, the meteor could be seen streaking across
the sky as it ignited into a series of explosions.
It flashed four times during its descent, with each ignition causing the
fireball to grow bigger and brighter. After the fourth explosion, the
extraterrestrial orb went dark and disappeared below the horizon.
Soon, residents of Taipei as well as Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung counties
posted videos of the unusual atmospheric phenomenon. Some people reported
hearing a sonic boom following each flash of light.

RARE METEOR CLUSTER EVENT CAPTURED BY SUBARU TELESCOPE IN HAWAII - 03
Aug 2021
Screenshot: Video: The "meteor cluster event" captured by the "Subaru-
Asahi Sky Camera" which occurred at 3:58 a.m. Hawai'i time on July 14
(1:58 p.m. UTC). In the foreground are the domes of other Maunakea
Observatories.
In the early morning hours of July 14, the camera captured an unusual
phenomenon in which more than a dozen meteors streamed from the same
direction in just 10 seconds.
This is a rare meteor outburst event associated with a "meteoroid
cluster." A meteoroid cluster is thought to be caused by meteoric
material breaking up into smaller pieces for some reason a short time
before it enters the Earth's atmosphere. This phenomenon provides
valuable information about the structure of meteor bodies. Meteoroid
clusters are so rare that only a few cases have been reported so far
since the phenomenon was first identified during the Leonid meteor shower
in 1997 (Note 2).

LARGE METEOR FIREBALL VISIBLE FOR 27 SECONDS OVER PUERTO RICO - 17
Jul 2021
A large meteor was visible at 4.55 local time this Friday from almost all
of Puerto Rico as reported by the Caribbean Astronomy Society (SAC).
"Although most meteors are only visible for a few seconds, this event was
significant since images that we managed to capture show that it was
visible for 27 seconds, that is almost half a minute," said Eddie
Irizarry, vice president of the SAC.
"It looked bigger and bigger, it didn't look like a common meteor," said
Idaly Correa, who witnessed the spectacular sighting from the
municipality of Guayanilla.
The SAC director clarified that despite the long duration of the meteor,
it was not space debris, but a natural meteor, that is, a space rock
disintegrating through the atmosphere.
He estimated that it was a rock between 2 and 5 meters in diameter whose
trajectory shows that it began to disintegrate at a height of 70 miles
(110 kilometers) over northwestern Puerto Rico, near Isabela and moved
east in direction to the small island of Culebra.
"Several cameras that we have in different parts of the island show that
it began to be visible at 4.55 with 35 seconds, and culminating at 4.56
with 2 seconds. It practically crossed the sky almost from one end to the
other", highlighted Juan González Alicea, president of the SAC.
The scientific entity explained that the long duration of the meteor was
due to a combination of being a larger rock than those that cause
sightings of common meteors, since it penetrated the atmosphere at a not
very inclined angle, that is, almost from the side, by what
disintegration occurred across much of the sky.
Alex Guadalupe, from the SAC, was able to observe it from the
metropolitan area and was surprised not only by its apparent size and
extensive tail, but also because it showed a turquoise green color, which
according to the SAC suggests that the rock contained magnesium and
copper.

provinces of Ciudad Real (region of Castilla-La Mancha) and Jaén
(Andalusia). It began over the south of Ciudad Real at an altitude of
about 85 km, and ended over the province of Jaén at a height of around 34
km.

Meteor Fireball Lights Up The Sky Over Pilbara, Western Australia -
Sun, 26 Jul 2021
Perth Observatory’s Matt Woods confirmed it was a meteor known as a
bolide - French for missile. Appearing as a fireball in the sky, it was
likely a space rock the size of a cricket ball or slightly larger
plunging towards earth that burned up high in Earth’s atmosphere, before
it could hit.
Appearing as a fireball in the sky, it was likely a space rock the size
of a cricket ball or slightly larger plunging towards earth that burned
up high in Earth's atmosphere before it could hit.
The Pilbara enjoyed a similar astronomical show in June last year when a
green-hued meteor was caught on film in Karratha grazing the atmosphere
before bouncing back into space.
That meteor was estimated to be no bigger than a pebble and was probably
travelling between 16-50km per second.
"So that's like going from the Perth Hills to the CBD in a second," Mr
Woods said at the time.
Mr Woods said hundreds of tonnes of space rubble entered Earth's
atmosphere every year but light pollution in the cities, and with water
covering 70 per cent of the globe, meant it often went unseen.
"You have to be in the right place, right time to see one," he said. "I
feel for the police officer because ... Murphy's Law is that you're back
will be turned when they (streak across the sky)."
Mr Woods said now was a good time to be looking to the stars. On
Thursday, amateur astronomers would be able to see Mars and the star
Regulus with just a pair of binoculars or a small telescope from 6.30pm.

EXPLOSION IN SKY STARTLES EARLY RISERS IN MALAYSIA (July 23) - 23 Jul
2021
Astronomy enthusiast Lim Choon Kiat, 49, was keeping watch at the time,
taking pictures of the night sky, but missed the event by two minutes.
"I was inside the house, observing through the equipment I had outside. I
went out at 4.50am to do some calibrations, and went inside my home again
at 4.57am. The flash of light from the sky happened at 4.59am before the
loud boom came at 5.02am.
"I missed it visually, but I was outside when the object from the sky
exploded," the telescope and binoculars supplier told The Vibes.
However, he said he was sure the explosion was from something falling
from the sky, as it was a sonic boom directed from the sky down to earth,
different from thunder and blasts on land.
...
The loud bangs and bright flashes were heard and detected in Tg Bungah,
Jelutong, and Sg Ara. A report from Kulim in Kedah also noted a sighting
of the bright flashes of light.
"We are still gathering information from people that could have seen or
heard it. My house has three closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras,
and all three recorded a loud bang at 5.02am.
"When an object comes into the earth's atmosphere at very high speed, it
will burn and will not be able to sustain itself. Usually, it will
explode and create a very loud bang.

METEOR FIREBALL LIGHTS UP SKY OVER IZMIR, TURKEY - 31 Jul 2021
The sight of a meteor lighting up the sky is usually described with the
word "mesmerizing" or "incredible". Yet, the celestial body that flew
over the Turkish city of Izmir at around 2 a.m. local time did not evoke
positive feelings. In fact, it prompted a doomsday scare among residents.
People exhausted from wildfires, that continue unabated in Turkey,
thought the meteor is a sign of the impending apocalypse.
"Now a meteor fell on Izmir. I guess this is the end", wrote one
user.
Another netizen wrote: "WTF is happening to this country?! I wouldn't be
surprised if a planet fell on my head".
According to local media, the meteor did not cause any injuries or
damage.

COMA SIGHTED ON MEGACOMET SITUATED BEYOND SATURN - 15 Jul 2021
Comet C/2014 UN271 (Bernardinelli-Bernstein), as seen in a synthetic
color composite image made with the Las Cumbres Observatory 1-meter
telescope at Sutherland, South Africa, on 22 June 2021. The diffuse cloud
is the comet's coma.
Spotting the first signs of activity on a record-setting comet of
gargantuan size came down to a time-zone advantage.
Astronomers in New Zealand were the first to spot a coma, or zone of gas
and dust, spreading around the megacomet C/2014 UN271, also known as
Bernardinelli-Bernstein, which may be 1,000 times more massive than a
typical comet. It could be the most massive comet ever found in all of
recorded history.
The team that monitors images captured by the Las Cumbres Observatory
(LCO) is spread around the world, and images from one of LCO's 1-meter
telescopes hosted at the South African Astronomical Observatory were
available on June 23 at midnight EDT (0400 GMT). That happens to be
afternoon in New Zealand.
What caught Bannister's attention was a foamy coma emerging at an
incredible distance from the sun. When the image was taken,
Bernardinelli-Bernstein was about 19 astronomical units (AU) from the
sun. (One AU is the average Earth-sun distance — about 93 million miles,
or 150 million kilometers). That's roughly double the orbital distance of
Saturn from the sun. Solar energy at that juncture is a fraction of what
we enjoy here on Earth.
That said, the comet has a lot of mass available to heat up.
Bernardinelli-Bernstein's huge core (or nucleus) is estimated to be more
than 62 miles (100 km) in diameter, which is three times as large as the
next-known largest comet nucleus — that of Comet Hale-Bopp, a famous
naked-eye comet that passed by Earth in 1998. Unfortunately for eager
astronomers, however, Bernardinelli-Bernstein won't get very close to our
planet for observations.

Largest Comet Ever Discovered Aug 19, 2021
A giant comet potentially larger than the island of Hawaii has been
spotted by Penn astronomers. The Bernardinelli-Bernstein comet (C/2014
UN271) is named after its discoverers, Pedro Bernardinelli G’21 Gr’21 and
Gary Bernstein, the Reese W. Flower Professor of Astronomy and
Astrophysics, who found it after sifting through archival images from the
Dark Energy Survey (DES) this past June. The pair had identified more
than 800 novel icy objects with orbits larger than Neptune’s; but one,
designated C/2014 UN271 (in reference to the date the picture was taken,
October 2014) was “by far the most interesting one we found,”
Bernardinelli told the New York Times. At the time the image was
captured, the object showed no features associated with comets, but its
dimensions were notable.
It was also discovered at a greater distance than any previous incoming
comet. First seen by DES in 2014, it was 29 astronomical units (au) from
the sun, and as of June 2021 it had moved closer to 20 au. It will reach
its perihelion (nearest point to the sun) in 2031 at 11 au, when it
grazes Saturn’s orbit.
Despite the comet’s great size, it won’t get close enough to Earth to be
visible to the naked eye. It’s also unlikely that any spacecraft will be
able to get a closeup look, given its distance and the amount of fuel
required for such a mission.

Meteor Fireball Over Spain On September 9 - 08 Sep 2021
On 9 September 2021, at about 0:47h local time, a bright fireball was
spotted over the center of Spain. This bolide was generated by a rock
from an asteroid that hit the atmosphere at about 72,000 km / h.
The fireball overflew the province of Ciudad Real (region of Castilla-La
Mancha).
It began over that province at an altitude of about 98 km, and ended at a
height of around 35 km.

This fireball was recorded from Spain on the night of 11 September 2021,
at 5:25 local time ( 3:25UT).
The bright meteor was produced by the entry in the atmosphere of a rock
(a meteoroid) from a comet at about 245,000 km / h. The high temperature
reached during the atmospheric entry gave rise to a fireball that began
at a height of around 128 km over the region of La Oriental (northeast of
Morocco).
The fireball moved northwest and ended at a height of about 77 km above
the same region.

VERY BRIGHT METEOR FIREBALL FALLS IN SPAIN (Sept. 15) - 15 Sep
2021
On 15 September 2021, at 22:25 local time (equivalent to 20:25 universal
time), a rock (a meteoroid) from an asteroid impacted the atmosphere at
about 76,000 km / h over the south of Spain.
The high temperature reached during its atmospheric entry gave rise to a
fireball that began at a height of around 91 km over the province of
Badajoz. The fireball moved northwest and ended at a height of about 22
km above the same province.
The bolide was seen by a wide number of casual eyewitnesses along the
country. The preliminary analysis of this event shows that the rock was
not fully destroyed: a small part of the object could survive and reach
the ground as a meteorite.

NASA Says 'Boom' And Shaking In Virginia Was A Fireball - 23 Sep
2021
Numerous reports came in all across the Harrisonburg, Virginia, area
Friday morning of a "boom" and ground shaking.
NASA says this was a fireball exploding in the sky. Power outages were
also reported in Hardy County.
Initial reports came in as a possible explosion in Shenandoah County, but
no explosion was found.
Satellite data did pick up on lightning flashes over Hardy County around
10:30 a.m., but there were no storms in the area.
This indicated something came from the sky, and that something was a very
large meteor called a bolite.
A pilot did report to the American Meteor Society that himself and the
co-pilot witnessed the meteor at 36,000 feet.
NASA is still investigating the event from September 17, according to
their meteoroid Facebook page. They are looking for more reports and will
continue to update.

Impact Flash On Jupiter Captured On Video By Amateur Astronomers - -
14 Sep 2021
The fireball was fixed in Jupiter's atmosphere. It first appeared at
22:39:27 UT on Sept. 13th and remained visible for a full two seconds.
The most likely explanation is a small asteroid or comet striking the
giant planet; an asteroid in the 100m size range would do the trick.

Meteor Fireball Over Granada, Spain (3 October) - 03 Oct 2021
On 3 October 2021, at 21:41h local time, this stunning fireball
was observed by a wide number of eyewitnesses over the south of Spain.
This bolide was generated by a rock (a meteoroid) from Comet D / 1978 R1
(Haneda-Campos) that hit the atmosphere at about 54,000 km / h. The
fireball overflew the province of Granada (Andalusia).
It began over the east of that province at an altitude of about 81 km,
moved northwest, and ended at a height of around 34 km over the north of

BRITISH COLUMBIA WOMAN AWAKES TO A HOLE IN HER ROOF AND A SPACE ROCK ON
HER PILLOW - 04 Oct 2021 - Swarm B. Clai
?
On Oct. 4, many were treated to the sight of a fireball lighting up the
night sky, with images of a meteor sailing above Lake Louise striking
awe.
Longtime Golden resident Ruth Hamilton, however, was fast asleep.
Or at least she was until she was roughly awoken by the sound of a crash
through her ceiling and the sensation of debris on her face.
"I just jumped up and turned on the light, I couldn't figure out what the
heck had happened," said Hamilton.
She said she took a look around to get her bearings, and spotting a rock
sitting neatly on her pillow next to where her head usually lays.
Hamilton called 911, unsure of what to make of the projectile. An police
officer arrived on the scene, and after establishing that the rock was
not there as a result of the ongoing construction in the Kicking Horse
Canyon, they settled on the only other explanation - that a meteorite had
come through her roof.
"We called the Canyon project to see if they were doing any blasting and
they weren't, but they did say they had seen a bright light in the sky
that had exploded and caused some booms," said Hamilton.

On Oct. 4, many were treated to the sight of a fireball lighting
up the night sky, with images of a meteor sailing above Lake Louise
striking awe.
Longtime Golden resident Ruth Hamilton, however, was fast asleep.
Ruth Hamilton was sound asleep last week when she was awoken by her dog
barking, the sound of a crash through her ceiling and the feeling of
debris on her face, the resident of Golden, B.C., said Monday.
She said she jumped out of bed and turned on the light to figure out what
had happened, and discovered a hole in her ceiling.
"I've never been so scared in my life," she said of the Oct. 3 incident.
"I wasn't sure what to do so I called 911 and, when I was speaking with
the operator, I flipped over my pillow and saw that a rock had slipped

A HARD RAIN'S A-GONNA FALL: METEOR FIREBALLS OBSERVED OVER A WIDE AREA OF
JAPAN on December 10 - 11 Dec 2021
After 7:00 pm on the 10th, a "fireball" that shines brightly among
shooting stars was observed in a wide range of the country.
NHK cameras in Aichi and Chiba prefectures shot bright and shining
fireballs flowing down for a few seconds like a tail.
It is said that the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan has also
received information that fireballs have been witnessed in a wide area
such as Saitama and Fukuoka prefectures.
According to the curator of the Hiratsuka City Museum in Kanagawa
Prefecture, Daichi Fujii said, "Because the fireballs are being observed
and the meteor shower is active, we may be able to find them during the
year-end and New Year holidays." ..

Many Vancouver Island residents took notice as a bright streaking light
flared across the skies Sunday.
Described by some as a "fireball" followed by a loud explosion just after
5 p.m., reports of the celestial event lit up social media from around
the island — including Saanich, Duncan, Port Alberni and Campbell River.
Some who reported hearing the loud bang said they thought it might have
been an earthquake, but B.C. seismologist John Cassidy suggested it may
have been a meteor.

Massive asteroids will whiz past Earth in coming weeks, including 1
nearly size of Empire State Building - Oct 16, 2021
NASA Has Tracked Over 27,000 Near-Earth Objects, Some Over 1 Kilometer
In Size.
Several massive asteroids are expected to whiz close to Earth in the
coming weeks, including one nearly the size of the Empire State Building.
Two are expected to soar near the planet on Saturday, followed by more in
the coming days, according to data from NASA's Center for Near Earth
Object Studies.

An asteroid barely missed Earth last week, and no one knew it was
coming - Nov 02, 2021
An asteroid about the size of a refrigerator shot past Earth last week,
and astronomers didn't know the object existed until hours after it was
gone.
It was a close call (from a cosmic perspective); the space rock's
trajectory on Oct. 24 carried it over Antarctica within 1,800 miles
(3,000 kilometers) of Earth - closer than some satellites — making it
the third-closest asteroid to approach the planet without actually
hitting it, CNET reported.
Scientists were unaware of the object, dubbed Asteroid 2021 UA1, because
it approached Earth's daytime side from the direction of the sun, so the
comparatively dim and small visitor went undetected until about 4 hours
after passing by at its closest point, according to CNET.

Unexpected Andromedid meteor outburst, strongest ever detected by
CMOR - 30 Nov 2021
The shower's not over yet.
"The current outburst is ongoing and it may be another few days or even a
week before the activity ramps down," says Brown. "These meteors are too
faint to see with the naked eye, but they are easy targets for our
radar."
Andromedids are debris from Biela's Comet, known to historians as "the
comet that split in two." 3D/Biela started to fall apart not long after
it was discovered in 1772. It was a double comet when it swung by Earth
in 1852 and, after that, was never seen again. In 1872 and 1885,
thousands of meteors shot out of the constellation Andromeda as Earth
passed through Biela's remains. Chinese records described "stars that
fell like rain."
Then the Andromedids vanished, too. The shower has been weak or absent
entirely since the late 19th century. Only a surprise outburst in 2011
signaled that Biela's debris might still be lurking nearby. This week's
activity is even more promising.
Comment: There appears to be a significant uptick of all kinds of Fire In The Sky activity

Meteor Fireball Over Brunei on December 16 - 18 Dec 2021
Alhakim, 31, was on his way home from work when the cosmic beam flashed
in front of his eyes while he was driving along Jalan Kebangsaan heading
north towards Jalan Utama Mentiri highway at around 7.40pm.
According to Alhakim, "On that evening, out of the blue I saw a flashing
bright green light shooting down from the sky."
His five-second dashcam footage revealed a meteor coming down from west
to east and disintegrated in the air.
"Few seconds later, the light just dispersed on its own. It was
beautiful!" he said.
The fireball dashing safely over Jame' 'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah was also
captured by two home security cameras at a PABD member's residence in
Kiarong.
"It was moving approximately at bearing 040 deg (NE) to 080 deg (E) from
Kiarong," Haji Azri said on his Instagram TV post.

GIANT METEOR FIREBALL CAUGHT ON RING CAMERA IN BILLINGS, MONTANA on
December 21 - 29 Dec 2021
Occurred on December 21, 2021 / Billings, Montana, USA
Being an amateur astronomer who dabbles with astrophotography, I was
thrilled to see my Ring camera overlooking my backyard had captured what
appears to be a large fireball traveling through the skies. This event
took place on December 21, 2021, at 3:30 am. Not sure if it was a large
meteor or maybe a piece of space junk entering the atmosphere north of
Billings, Montana. I am still researching to see if I can find out just
what it was.
