88 pound meteor strikes the moon causing a massive explosion - 07 Jul
2017
The moon was struck by a meteor creating an explosion visible with the naked
eye.
A METEOR with the explosive power of TEN cruise missiles has struck the Moon -
sparking a massive explosion visible with the naked eye.
And terrifyingly the 56,000 mph collision - captured by NASA scientists
highlighting the catastrophic danger planet earth faces from similar meteors -
was caused by a space rock weighing no more than 88 lbs (40 kilos).
Despite the meteor's tiny proportions - about the size of a small boulder and
the weight of an average 10-year-old boy - the impact damage was colossal and
the explosion shone with the brightness of a magnitude 4 star.
-
New Comet: C/2017 O1 - 25 Jul 2017
CBET nr. 4414, issued on 2017, July 24, announces the discovery of a comet
(magnitude ~15.3) in the course of the "All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae"
(ASASSN) program, from images taken with the 14-cm "Cassius" survey telescope at
Cerro Tololo on July 19.32 UT. The new comet has been designated C/2017 O1.
Visual estimates have the comet at mag. ~10 on July 24, 2017. Syuichi Nakano,
Sumoto, Japan, notes on CBET 4414 that this comet could reach total visual
magnitude 7 during September-November.
-
Astronomers detect space rock 3 days after it passes close to Earth July 25,
2017
Asteroid 2017 OO1 has an estimated size between 82 and 256 feet (between 25 and
78 meters). When the space rock was first seen from Mauna Loa, Hawaii, it was
showing a very faint magnitude of 17.9 which suggests it is a very dark or non
reflective asteroid, thus making it very difficult to detect.

NASA captures meteor fireball over Arizona, sonic boom picked up by
seismometer - 26 Sep 2017
The disruption produced a sonic boom that was picked up by a seismometer near
Tucson. This indicates that the fireball may have produced meteorites that
dropped somewhere over the desert.
Analysis of our video data indicates that the object that produced the fireball
was likely an asteroid fragment that weighed approximately 100 pounds and had a
diameter of roughly 1 foot.

Meteor shower from dead comet arises again after 58 years - 25 Aug 2017
Japanese astronomers observed the elusive "Phoenicid meteor shower" and have
determined that it was spawned by the now vanished Comet Blanpain. They also
found that Comet Blanpain was active, though only weakly, in the early 20th
Century. This is the first time that researchers could determine the activity of
a comet by observing its associated meteor shower. These results are important
for understanding the evolution of minor bodies in the Solar System.

Such a "shock wave" can be caused by various situations, such as an
explosion, the passage of a supersonic airplane, the entrance to the
atmosphere of a meteorite or an Unidentified Flying Object – UFO.

A large fluorescent green trail above France - 26 Nov 2017
Yesterday morning at the Herbiers in the Vendée, at around 8:45 a. m., I
saw a great green fluorescent train located North-West, going from the
North and going down to the West, it only lasted a fraction of a
second... It looked like a fireworks trail, but very high in the sky and
almost parallel to the horizon line...
According to the description, you had the chance to observe a daytime
fireball. It so happens that there was one of them observed in the
North-West of France this Saturday morning, around 8:15 am. I think it's
about this one.

Two large meteor fireballs blaze over southern England, dozens of people
report hearing a deafening boom (UPDATE) - 26 Nov 2017
Several even said they heard rumbling and 'multiple booms lasting 2-3
seconds' as the object passed overhead although others said it was
silent.
Experts classified it as a bolide, which is the term used when a meteor
causes a flash as bright as the moon.
Footage of the fireball, filmed in Wilcot, Wiltshire, shows a bright dot
rapidly getting bigger as it travels across the sky.
It culminates in a huge flash of light before quickly reducing in size
until it disappears.
Another meteor was seen flying across the same region six hours later
with some witnesses reporting that it appeared to break up in the sky.
UK Meteor Observation Network member Richard Fleet said the first
fireball was the second brightest the country had seen in three years.

Russian astronomers show big 'unusual orbit' asteroid 3200 phaeton
approaching Earth - 16 Nov 2017
December 17, 2017 will see an interesting astronomic event in the form
of object 3200 Phaethon approaching our planet. This is a fairly large
asteroid nearly 5 kilometers in diameter, which will fly past the Earth
within 10 million kilometers, close by space standards.
The asteroid derives its name from its unusual orbit that in perihelia
brings it closer to the Sun than any other named asteroid (20 million
kilometers). To compare: Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun in the
Solar system, is 46 million kilometers from the Sun.

Green meteor fireball seen over New South Wales, Australia - 23 Nov
2017
Red Comet Fragment.
Speculation ran rife online after Inverell Times reader Lawana Hillhouse
reported seeing a strange light moving over the town on Thursday night,
November 23, at approximately 9.45pm.
"It was sort of round and real red," Lawana said. She watched the object, which she initially
believed was a fireball, move at a medium pace towards Moree.
"I only saw the tail end of it, but it was a green flame with a bit of a
trail, bright but moving reasonably slow - not quite as fast as a meteor," he said. He said it
was moving towards the ground.
"I thought it might have been a bit of space junk because of the colour.

He watched it pass while sat in his living room and said it was visible

Lorne said it was travelling too slowly to be a meteorite, but could not
confirm what the light could have been.

Backyard camera captures meteor fireball exploding over South Jersey
- 06 Dec 2017
"It was pretty amazing to see this light coming through the sky, and
then almost like an explosion," said Nancy Castrenze, of Mays Landing,
"It's not that they're big, they're coming in fast," said Joseph Sowers,
an Adjunct Professor of Astronomy at Stockton University. "They come in
anywhere from 25,000 to 160,000 miles per hour."
After looking at the video captured a little after 3:00 a.m. last week,
Sowers says the meteor definitely came in hot, but the chance it
actually touched down is low.
