LARGE METEOR FIREBALL EXPLODES OVER KRASNOYARSK, RUSSIA on January 31
- 31 Jan 2023
A large meteor allegedly measuring from one to five meters was seen in
the sky over Russia's Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk on Tuesday, Sergey
Veselkov, chief of the Reshetnev University observatory, told TASS.
Videos of a fireball flying over the city were posted on the internet on
Tuesday evening.
"Undoubtedly, it was a bolide. Judging by its brightness, and it was
brighter than the moon, the bolide measured several meters, between one
to five meters. Such rocks, while flying in the atmosphere, burn up
practically completely. However, a certain amount of matter may reach the
Earth's surface," Veselkov said.

HUGE METEOR FIREBALL OVER SAUDI ARABIA on February 9 - 09 Feb
2023
A video clip circulating on social media documents the moment a meteorite
fell in Dawadmi Governorate, northwest of Riyadh.
Meteorologist Abdulaziz Al-Hussain said in a tweet: "A strong blue light
appeared in the sky surrounding the meteorite in the Najd region, and a
tremor was said to be felt on its impact," local media reports .
At the same level, the head of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Eng.
Majed Al Zahra confirmed that this bright meteor, which is also called
(the fireball), is larger than the ordinary meteor, and drew a lot of
attention in social media platforms, where many confirmed to see it in a
very bright blue color. It illuminated the surface of the earth and was
accompanied by a loud sound, which means that it descended very deep into
the atmosphere.
As for the blue and white color, the dominant composition of the
meteorite may play a role in the observed colors of the fireball, with
some elements giving distinct colors when evaporated, for example sodium
producing a bright yellow color, nickel appears green, and magnesium
appears blue and white, which is what was seen, but could also be a
result of atmospheric conditions, or even a camera, but the lack of
multi-angle recordings of the meteorite makes this explanation less
likely.

SMALL ASTEROID 2023 CX1 (NEOCP SAR2667) IMPACTED EARTH on February
13 - 13 Feb 2023
On 2023 February 12.8 (20:18:07 UTC), K. Sarneczky found a small asteroid
with the 0.60-m Schmidt + CCD of the Piszkéstető Observatory in Hungary
(K88 MPC code) that was soon after put on the NEOCP list with the
provisional designation Sar2667 for the follow-up by other observers. The
object was subsequently imaged by many observers around the world and
various impact assessment systems found a 100% impact probability in the
area of the English Channel on Feb. 13 between 02 and 04 UTC. This is the
second discovery by Sarneczky of an impactor, following the 2022 EB5
event in March 2022.
M.P.E.C. 2023-C103 issued subsequently on 2023 February 13 at 04:13 UT
assigned the official designation 2023 CX1 to Sar2667 with the following
comment:
K. Sarneczky reported a new NEOCP candidate observed at GINOP-KHK (K88).
Rapid follow-up from multiple sites indicated an impact with the Earth's
atmosphere on February 13 03:00 UTC near the coast of Normandy, France,
as determined by imminent impact monitoring services such as JPL's Scout,
ESA's Meerkat and MPC's internal warning system.
Map of the impact zone predicted to occur a few kilometers from French
coast, North-East of Le Havre. Click on it for a bigger version.
023 CX1 was a small Aten asteroid with an estimated size of ~1.0 m (based
on the object's absolute magnitude H=32.6).

METEORITE FOUND! SPACE ROCK FROM BRILLIANT FIREBALL LOCATED IN FRANCE
- Fri, 17 Feb 2023
On February 12, around 10 pm EST (0300 GMT, February 13), an asteroid
burned up rather dramatically over Europe.
Hours later, a space-focused citizen science volunteer group found a
meteorite from the fireball event 2023 CX1.
Members of the science group Vigie-Ciel (translated to 'Sky Lookout') and
a related project, FRIPON, another space-focused citizen science effort
working with French scientific institutions like the Paris Observatory
and the University of Paris-Saclay can be credited with confirming the
exciting find.
Loïs Leblanc, an 18-year-old student, found the meteorite first. At 4:47
pm, Leblanc chanced upon "a dark stone barely level with the ground of a
field in the town of Saint-Pierre-le-Viger," the group wrote in a blog
post.

FRAGMENT OF 1,000-POUND METEOR THAT EXPLODED OVER TEXAS COULD REVEAL NEW
INSIGHTS ABOUT OUR SOLAR SYSTEM - 24 Feb 2023
A chunk from the fireball meteor that exploded on Feb. 15 has been
recovered. Other fragments of the hefty space rock were likely showered
across the nearby area.
A hefty meteor weighing around the same as a grand piano recently
exploded in the skies above Texas, potentially showering the surrounding
area with smaller fragments. One of these meteorite chunks has already
been recovered and could help reveal more about our cosmic neighborhood,
experts say.
The meteor, which was likely a small asteroid, entered Earth's atmosphere
on Feb. 15 at around 5 p.m. CST and broke apart in a burst of flames
about 21 miles (33.8 kilometers) above the city of McAllen. This type of
space rock is known as a fireball meteor because of the bright flash
given off as it breaks apart, due to friction between the fast-moving
object and the air in the atmosphere.
"Based on analysis of preliminary information from several sources, NASA
experts believe the object was a meteoroid about two feet [0.6 meters] in
diameter weighing about 1,000 pounds [454 kilograms]," representatives
from NASA's Meteor Watch wrote on Facebook. The meteor was traveling at
around 27,000 mph (43,450 km/h) when it exploded and released the
equivalent energy of around 8 tons (7.3 metric tons) of TNT, they added.

CHELYABINSK METEOR: TEN YEARS ON FROM 'WAKE-UP CALL', HOW SAFE ARE WE
FROM A POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC STRIKE? - 15 Feb 2023
A decade on from the Chelyabinsk meteor, and our planet has come a long
way in detecting the threat of interstellar objects potentially hurtling
into the atmosphere. But has the risk been completely eliminated - and
exactly how prepared are we for another dramatic impact?
t wasn't quite the day the Earth stood still, but those who witnessed a
fiery asteroid briefly outshine the sun as it soared towards the Russian
city of Chelyabinsk will almost certainly never forget it.
Comparable to the size of a house and travelling at a scintillating 11
miles per second, what was quickly dubbed the Chelyabinsk meteor arrived
unannounced in a manner reminiscent of a science-fiction disaster film.
It was an unnerving spectacle.

NASA confirms first radar-observed meteor fall seen in Maine - 12 Apr

on Saturday was the first radar-observed meteorite fall seen in Maine,
NASA confirmed.

fireball was seen moving through the sky. This apparent meteorite fall
occurred at 11:56 a.m. local time, NASA said.
NASA's radar was able to observe the event for nearly five minutes and
calculated fallen meteorite masses from 1.59 — 322 grams, or less than a
pound, "although larger masses may have fallen."
Because of this, the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum in Bethel is offering a
$25,000 reward for the first meteorite they get weighing one kilogram or
more, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Fireball Crossing Western Australian Sky On May 2 Likely A 10cm Meteor,
Astronomer Says - 02 May 2023
Western Australia's southern sky lit up early this morning as a fireball
entered the earth's atmosphere and streaked across the sky to end south
of Rottnest Island in Perth.
Early risers spotted the meteor at 5:03am and it lasted about 15 seconds
as it travelled from east to west.
Planet astronomer Dr Hadrien Devillepoix dismissed claims it was space
junk and said it was a natural object that entered the atmosphere.
"People would have had a really good show of it," he said.
"It was a very shallow entry, so a very slow, long fireball - basically
crossing the entire Wheatbelt."
Dr Devillepoix estimated the meteor was most likely a 10-centimetre rock
that travelled about 14 kilometres per second.
"Any pieces, if there were any, would be in the ocean by now," he
said.
"But we don't think anything survived at this stage."

LONDONERS REPORT HEARING LOUD 'EXPLOSION' DURING CORONATION PREPARATIONS,
ANOTHER 'GIGANTIC BANG' IS HEARD LESS THAN A WEEK LATER - 05 May
2023
People on Twitter have reported hearing the noise in Marble Arch and
around the parade route
A huge bang was heard in Central London today as thousands of people
start to gather for the King's Coronation, with speculation rife over
what caused the mystery sound. There's no suggestion of any emergency,
but people in centre of the city reported hearing a huge bang at about
11.45am today (Friday, May 5).
Londoners were in a panic after a "gigantic bang" was heard across the
city. Emergency services attended the scene after World War II bomb was
found in Stables Market, Camden. People flocked to social media to ask
what the "bang" was with some thinking it could have been thunder as
storms roll in across the capital in line with Met Office forecasts but
others in nearby locations thought the bomb had exploded.
At the same time, a lightning bolt is said to have hit Belsize Park in
Camden, causing the loud "bang" heard by many.
One Twitter user said: "Currently in a Camden Office, there are ongoing
evacuations because of a WW2 bomb found nearby, it hasn't exploded so
far, apparently the bang was a lightning strike in Belsize park leading
to a school being evacuated."

A METEORITE MAY HAVE CRASHED THROUGH THE ROOF OF A NEW JERSEY HOME on May
8, Police Say - 08 May 2023
A metallic object believed to be a meteorite crashed through the roof a
home on Old Washington Crossing Pennington Road in Hopewell Township on
Monday, May 8, 2023.
Officials were trying to determine if a metallic object that smashed
through the roof of a Hopewell Township house Monday was a meteorite.
The oblong, 4-inch-by-6-inch object penetrated the the roof of Old
Washington Crossing Pennington Road ranch-style home, then crashed
through the ceiling and stopped after it hit the hardwood floor,
according to a statement from the Hopewell Township Police
Department.
The house was occupied at the time but no injuries were reported, police
said.
The department said it has contacted several other agencies to aid in
identifying the object and safeguarding the residents.
It may be related to a current meteor shower called the Eta Aquariids,
which was expected to reach its peak activity during the pre-dawn hours
this past Saturday. The shower occurs when the Earth passes through tiny
pieces of space debris from the famous Halley's Comet.

MYSTERIOUS 'FIREBALLS' SPOTTED OVER JAPAN'S OKINAWA PREFECTURE - 11
May 2023
A fireball-like object is seen crossing the sky over Okinawa Prefecture
on the evening of May 10, leaving a long trail of bright light in the
night sky.
Residents captured footage of bright lights streaking across the night
sky in southern Japan
Strange fireball-like objects were seen flying over Japan's Okinawa
Prefecture on Wednesday night, according to local news reports, with
several eyewitnesses taking to social media to share clips of the
spectacle.
A video captured by an NHK reporter around 8:30pm local time shows the
objects blazing through the sky near Naha City in Japan's southernmost
region. The journalist said they were "surprised" by the sighting, noting
"At first, I thought they were fireworks, but I didn't hear any sound and
they moved in a straight line."
The Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory, located in Ishigaki City on
the Okinawa island chain, later confirmed that it spotted a "streak of
light" in the sky north of the facility at 8:33pm on Wednesday.
A number of locals also filmed the fireballs and uploaded the footage
online, with one video created by the Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper compiling a
series of clips shared by residents. On social media, some observers
speculated the lights were pieces of a meteor or shooting stars.
While the objects have yet to be identified definitively, the
Ishigakijima observatory offered a plausible explanation, noting that
debris from a Chinese rocket launched last November was expected to re-
enter Earth's atmosphere on the night of May 10. The observatory
predicted the space junk would "pass directly over the main island of
Okinawa," or just north of it, NHK added.

"PENETRATED THE ROOF": METEORITE CRASHES INTO NEW JERSEY BEDROOM -
May 11, 2023
The operations manager for the American Meteor Society, Mike Hankey,
believes a metallic object that crashed through the roof of a Hopewell
Township, New Jersey, home on Monday is a meteorite.
"This is most certainly a meteorite, and there are likely more meteorite
fragments now scattered around the town," Hankey said in a statement on
the Hopewell Township's Facebook page.
Hopewell Township announced in a press release that the metallic object
is 4 inches by 6 inches.

TWO VERY BRIGHT METEOR FIREBALLS CROSSED THE ITALIAN SKIES on May 24
- 25 May 2023
Last night two very bright meteors ("bolides") crossed the Italian skies,
the first shortly after midnight and the second around half past four in
the morning. The first involved the northern skies, the second Sardinia.
The midnight one, in particular, was filmed by 11 Prisma cameras, i.e.
the First Italian Network for the Systematic Surveillance of Meteors and
the Atmosphere , an initiative promoted by the National Institute of
Astrophysics (INAF).
The first calculations indicate that the bolide was spotted at an
altitude of 75 kilometers, while it was falling at 15.8 kilometers per
second, and disappeared at an altitude of 28 km, when the speed was
reduced by two thirds due to friction with the 'atmosphere. Trajectory
and speed are compatible with those of an asteroid intercepted by the
Earth's gravity.
Now the search for any fragments that may have reached the ground intact
begins : according to Prisma's calculations, the area to keep an eye on
is that of the municipalities of Sospiro, San Daniele Po and Pieve
d'Olmi, to the south-east of Cremona.
The " Sardinian " meteor, on the other hand, crossed the atmosphere too
quickly and died out at too high an altitude to have given rise to the
fall of meteorites.

Green meteor fireball shooting across the sky over British Columbia on June 3 - 05 Jun 2023
One B.C. man captured the flaming ball on his dash camera while driving home along 36 Avenue in Langley, just after 11 p.m.
"It was very large, as opposed to seeing a meteor shower when all the objects are very small," says Brody, who only gave his first name, and noted he was with two other friends at the time.
He says he was surprised by how big and bright it was.
"My reaction was just 'wow'," he says. "The three of us who saw it all reacted because it was just not something that you see on a regular basis."
Brody posted the video to Reddit to see if anyone else saw it and to get more information about the sighting.
UBC physics and astronomy associate professor Aaron Boley did not witness the fireball but did hear about it.
"By the accounts that I can find, witnesses saw a fireball event, which is a bright meteor caused by a meteoroid that was probably in the tens of centimetre range," he explains.
People also took note of its colour.
"Witnesses are also describing a green colour, which, while less common, is normal for some fireballs, and may indicate a relatively large fraction of nickel," he says.

Meteor fireball triggers bright flashes and sonic booms as it travels across skies in North Island, New Zealand on June 3 - 04 Jun 2023
A fireball was seen travelling the skies across the top of the North Island on Saturday night, with some people reportedly hearing sonic booms.
Professor James Scott from Otago University's Department of Geology said he had received quite a few reports of meteor sightings.
"It was seen across the top of the North Island, and captured on a security camera and also one of the fireball cameras," he said.
"There was also a sonic boom heard by several people. There will almost certainly be more security cameras that picked it up but that often takes a few days to show up.
The WeatherWatch and Fireballs Aotearoa websites were buzzing with comments about the sightings.
Machelien Sherry wrote: "I saw a huge white ball flash across the sky heading north. We were on the Northern Motorway by Greville offramp around 10.45pm.
"Got such a fright that I nearly sent our Uber driver off the road!"
Kanak and Luke reported seeing a "massive meteorite" from their home in Blockhouse Bay.
"It was a beautiful sighting that lasted 10-30 seconds, with very bright white light brighter than the moon followed by a long yellow tail and a small explosion before disappearing," they said.
"What an experience of a lifetime."

BOOM! JAPANESE ASTRONOMER CATCHES METEORITE SMASHING INTO THE MOON on
Feb. 23 - 11 Mar 2023
A Japanese astronomer captured the telltale flash of a meteorite
impacting the moon, causing a brief flash on our celestial neighbor's
nightside.
Daichi Fujii, curator of the Hiratsuka City Museum, recorded the event
using cameras set to monitor the moon.
The time of the flash was 20:14:30.8 Japan Standard Time (7:14 a.m. EST,
or 1114 GMT) on Feb. 23. The meteorite appears to have struck near Ideler
L crater, slightly northwest of Pitiscus crater, Fujii said.
