Did you see it? Exploding meteor lights Bay Area skies Thursday morning -
01/18/2013
Turned out, it wasn't a transformer but a meteor being transformed. The
spectacular bright light in the sky that stunned Young and other Bay Area
residents was an exploding meteor called a fireball, said Chabot Space and
Science Center astronomer Ben Burress.
The flash of light lit up the skies about 5:25 a.m., Burress said. People from
as far away as Monterey County and into Nevada reported the fireball to the
Space and Science Center, Burress said.
"As near as we can figure, judging from what people have told us they've seen,
what we had was a fireball," Burress said. "It's a fairly rare and random event.
These things can just come out of the blue."

Predawn spectacle was flaming comet - January 23, 2013
The fireball that lit up the predawn Northern California sky last week was a
small comet that flamed out when it hit the Earth's atmosphere, a
researcher said.
The comet "instantly turned into dust and gas," resulting in the flash of light
seen by many at 5:21 a.m. last Thursday, said meteor hunter Peter Jenniskens, a
scientist at the Seti Institute in Mountain View.
Because the comet vaporized, no pieces fell to Earth, Jenniskens said.
The comet came into contact with the Earth's atmosphere just north of Yosemite
National Park at a speed of 160,000 mph, Jenniskens said.

A shooting star accompanied by a loud boom was observed before dawn Jan. 20
across broad areas of the Kanto region, igniting intense interest on the
Internet with the posting of video footage and eyewitness accounts.
Fumiaki Goto, 28, an office worker in Tokigawa, Saitama Prefecture, captured
footage of the fireball by chance while taking photos of the night sky just
after 2:40 a.m.
The plume was enhanced suddenly after its color turned to bluish white from
light green and fell toward Ibaraki Prefecture, finally with a reddish hue, said
Goto.

Meteorite hits Russian Urals: Fireball explosion wreaks havoc, over 500
injured - 15 February, 2013
Russia’s Urals region has been rocked by a meteorite explosion in the
stratosphere. The impact wave damaged several buildings, and blew out thousands
of windows amid frigid winter weather. Hundreds are seeking medical attention
for minor injuries.
According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air
defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo blew
the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers, local newspaper Znak
reports quoting a source in the military.
Regnum news agency quoted a military source who claimed that the vapor
condensation trail of the meteorite speaks to the fact that the meteorite was
intercepted by air defenses.
Army units found three meteorite debris impact sites, two of which are in an
area near Chebarkul Lake, west of Chelyabinsk. The third site was found some 80
kilometers further to the northwest, near the town of Zlatoust. One of the
fragments that struck near Chebarkul left a crater six meters in diameter.
According to estimates by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the space object
weighed about 10 tons before entering Earth’s atmosphere.

Meteor strike injures hundreds in central Russia - 15 February 2013
A meteor crashing in central Russia's Ural mountains has injured at least 500
people, as the shockwave blew out windows and rocked buildings.
A fireball was seen streaking through the clear morning sky above the city of
Yekaterinburg, followed by loud bangs.
The meteor is believed to have landed in a lake near Chebarkul, a town in the
neighbouring Chelyabinsk region.
Much of the impact was felt in the city of Chelyabinsk, some 200km (125 miles)
south of Yekaterinburg.
Scientists have played down suggestions that there is any link between the event
in the Urals and 2012 DA14, an asteroid expected to race past the Earth on
Friday at a distance of just 27,700km (17,200 miles) - the closest ever
predicted for an object of that size.
Prof Alan Fitzsimmons, of the Astrophysics Research Centre at Queen's University
Belfast, said there was "almost definitely" no connection.
"One reason is that 2012 DA14 is approaching Earth from the south, and this
object hit in the northern hemisphere," he told BBC News.
This is not a valid reason.

Russian meteorite blast explained: Fireball explosion, not meteor shower -
15 February, 2013
Russian scientists investigating the meteorite explosion in the Urals explained
the nature of the event that caused havoc in the region. NASA said the shockwave
force was equal to a 500-kiloton explosion – 30 times the Hiroshima blast.
NASA has increased its estimate of the energy released during the blast to
nearly 500 kilotons of TNT. The calculations were based on the data from
infrasound stations across the globe, some being over 6,500 kilometers away from
Chelyabinsk. In comparison, the US atom bomb 'Little Boy' destroyed Hiroshima in
1945 with only 16 kilotons.
According to Canadian astronomer Margaret Campbell-Brown, the blast could be
even more powerful than North Korea’s recent nuclear test. Citing the data from
two infrasound stations near the impact site, she estimated the object to be 15
meters in diameter with a mass of around 40 tons.

ScienceCasts: What Exploded Over Russia? - Feb 26, 2013
Two weeks after an asteroid exploded over Russia's Ural mountains, scientists
are making progress understanding the origin and make-up of the unexpected space
rock. This week's ScienceCast presents their latest results.
-
WHAT EXPLODED OVER RUSSIA (NASA)? - Feb. 26, 2013:
Western Ontario Professor of Physics Peter Brown analyzed the data: "The
asteroid was about 17 meters in diameter and weighed approximately 10,000 metric
tons," he reports. "It struck Earth's atmosphere at 40,000 mph and broke apart
about 12 to 15 miles above Earth's surface. The energy of the resulting
explosion exceeded 470 kilotons of TNT." For comparison, the first atomic bombs
produced only 15 to 20 kilotons
-
LARGEST RUSSIAN METEOR FRAGMENT FOUND - Feb 27, 2013
Russian scientists on Monday hailed the finding of what they said was the
largest yet fragment of a meteorite that came crashing through the skies over
Siberia and exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains last week.
The find was among a large number of fragments brought back from the Federal
University of the Urals by a ski expedition team.
"We haven't been able count [the fragments], but we believe it's more than
100," said Victor Grokhovsky, member of the meteorite committee at the
university.
"But the most significant among them was a fragment, which Masha PInkova found
yesterday evening, not even 24 hours ago, that weighs 1.8 kilograms," he
explained. "It's the largest fragment of this meteor that we have found to this
day."

Biggest Chunk of Chelyabinsk Meteorite Goes on Sale - 29 September 2013
The charred heavenly stone, offered on the classified ads site Avito.ru with
the slogan "a serious meteorite for serious people," weighs 3.36 kilograms
(7.4 pounds). It was certified by the Chelyabinsk State University to be,
indeed, a meteorite shard and not just a lump of earthly dirt.
-
Chelyabinsk meteorite is 'as old as the solar system', say Russian
scientists - 07 October 2013
It is indicated by isotope tests and the structure of meteorite fragments. The
initial mass of the Chelyabinsk Meteorite was around 10,000 metric
tonnes at an altitude of 1,000 kilometres. The mass was reduced to about
one tonne with an enormous explosion at an altitude of 23 km.
That is a lot of reduction. So there must have been a lot of water and/or
organic ices in it. But there cannot be a lot of these ices in an asteroid as
the warmth
generated by the Sun would have evaporated it long ago. Comet dust to mass
ratios have been suggested to vary from 0.1 to greater than one suggesting both
the name
DIRTY SNOWBALLS or ICEY DIRTBALLS. So the Russian meteor was a comet fragment as
first announced by them.

Russian Meteor Explosion Might Mean Earth Gets Hit More Often Than We Think
- 10.07.13
On the morning of Feb. 15, a fireball lit up the skies above the town of
Chelyabinsk. A 12,000-ton bollide estimated to be roughly 20 meters in diameter
came screaming into
the atmosphere at more than 42,000 mph. Locals could feel the heat from the
blast while dozens of dashboard cameras made recordings of the event, which were
disseminated
widely on social media.

Meteor that crashed in Russia was part of a 656-foot wide asteroid that broke

- Experts say the meteor weighed 10,000 tonnes and was 55 feet wide

- Scientists have analysed more than 53 tiny fragments of the meteor
- It is thought to have been part of a large Apollo asteroid called 2011 EO40
-
Massive meteor that slammed into Russia in February left cosmic dust that
showered Earth for MONTHS - 19 August 2013
- According to NASA's Suomi NPP weather satellite, the meteor left behind
hundreds of tones of microscopic rubble
- Detonated 15 miles above the city of Chelyabinsk on February 15, injuring
more than 1,000 people
- Using the satellite's Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite, NASA has released a
video showing how the dust from the meteor was thrown up 28 miles and coated the
Earth
- It also left visible chunks on the ground for passers by to pick up
That represents far less material than is ejected by an erupting volcano, but it
still got dragged around by the circulating atmosphere. After four days, the
Suomi sensors had watched that dust plume wrap all the way around the planet.
Eventually, it smeared into a single, 250 mile wide belt at an altitude of
roughly 22 miles. The satellite watched it sit there for months, slowly
settling downward about 295 feet each day.
-

Picture of Meteorite over Cuba Wednesday - Explosion - FEBRUARY 15, 2013
Residents of the city of Rhodes, the province of Cienfuegos, Cuba, said he
witnessed the crash and explosion of a celestial body on the evening of
Wednesday, reported a local television station.Cubans say the meteor exploded in
the sky, causing a bright light and making the city the houses tremble. The beam
would be the size of a bus, the station reports.
A resident of Wheels said, "around 20h sites Wednesday, a light moving in the
sky and became a very big flame." After three minutes, he said, you can hear an
explosion. Cuban experts believe that the phenomenon was caused by fragments of
stones and metals that enter the atmosphere at high speed. They seek fragment
remains in the soil.

afternoon was probably a rarely seen daylight meteor.
The Otago Daily Times received reports from about a dozen people in at least six
locations about the object seen between 2.45pm and 3pm on Sunday.
Mark Davis of Wanaka saw an "extremely bright" silver light dropping to Earth as
he was driving from Omarama towards the Lindis Pass at 2.45pm on Sunday.

Bright green fireball expodes over Poland, resulting in shockwave and 'mighty

Last Saturday night (2/3 March), a bright object flying toward the earth was
seen in various parts of the country. "It was seen from the city of Poznan to
Grudziadz. It lit up the sky for a few seconds from east to west, and then an
impact was heard", wrote a reader of Alert24.pl. "The passage of an NEO [Near
Earth Object] is not uncommon", explains Jerzy Rafalski, an astronomer from
Torun in an interview with Radio RMF FM.

More Keighley UFO sightings reported - 8th March 2013
A UFO, which could have been a meteor, spotted in the skies above Cross Roads by
theatre nurse Jeanette Bray
Some readers have suggested it may not be a coincidence it was the same night –
February 15 – that a meteor dramatically broke up in flames over the Russian
city of Chelyabinsk, damaging buildings and injuring about 1,000 people
Commenting online about the Cross Roads sighting, a website visitor with the
user name pjl20 said: “Was this a genuine meteor or just a random piece of
‘space junk’ burning up in the atmosphere on re-entry?

Russian Fireball Explosion Comes Amid Fireball Season - 15 February
2013
It's fireball season on Earth, and it is starkly clear for residents in eastern
Russia where a bright fireball exploded in the atmosphere early today (Feb. 15).
For reasons scientists don't quite understand, there appears to be an increase
in the number of bright meteors visible blazing through the night sky during the
month of February.

It is very odd that the SA news has not posted or aired any news of this rare
daytime event; please help by contacting the news agencies in your country and
urge them to write a story!
Contrary to SA News reports-
The object was NOT the size of a marble. This object was in the order of 10s-
100s kg, maybe up to half the size of a VW bug or a full bug, to be seen in
daytime and produce sonics. Hopefully they will find a competent scientist to
comment. Since there was no fragmentation reported I suspect that it may be an
iron meteoroid that entered the atmosphere. I also suspect given the reports
that we have a new meteorite to be found on the ground.

In this new video from Big Think, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson says he’s
almost embarrassed for our species that it takes a warning shot across our bow

astronomers about getting serious about asteroid detection and deflection; that
it’s a matter of when not if Earth will get smacked by an asteroid. "But it took
an actual meteor over Russia exploding with 25 times the power of the atom bomb
in Hiroshima to convince people that maybe we should start doing something about
it."

HAVE WE ACCIDENTALLY PREVENTED ANOTHER ICE AGE? - March 21,2013
Under the circumstances, what’s not to like about global warming?
Among other things, droughts, desertification, stronger hurricanes and more
extreme climate events, I hear you say.
Well, yes, but when it comes to extreme climate events, it’s hard to beat 3,000
feet of ice in your yard.
Droughts and deserts? You can get them in cold venues as well as warm ones. For
instance, average annual precipitation for Antarctica is about 6.5 inches a
year, and for about half the continent it is 4 inches or less. Areas that
receive less than 10 inches of precipitation a year are classified as deserts.
Temperature extremes? Granted, 120 F temperatures suck, but they’re a lot easier
to take than minus 75 F temperatures, which helps explain why there are 7.2
million people living in Baghdad and 300 people living at McMurdo station.
So which is the better future? Mangos in Montana or polar bears in Portland?

Ball of fire lights up skies above Spain - April 15, 2013
“The impact was so abrupt that the object immediately caught fire, creating a
ball of flame around 100 kilometers above the Earth,” Jose Maria Madiedo of the
University of Huelva told the Huffington Post. The meteor then shot towards
Madrid at over 75,000 kilometers an hour before disintegrating completely at an
altitude of 70 kilometers.
The Spanish Institution for the Study of Meteors and Meteorites, which tracked
the fireball, classified the meteorite as a piece of a comet that was flying by
Earth
.
The explosion on impact was so bright that it could be viewed as far away as the
southern Spanish cities of Seville, Granada and Murcia.
"I was looking up at the sky when there was a flash that in a matter of seconds
began to grow," astronomer Leonor Ana Hernandez said to the Huffington
Post. "When the explosion happened, everything around us turned white for a few
seconds," and several green and blue followed the initial explosion, she added.
The explosion as the fireball entered the atmosphere sparked comparisons with
the 500-kiloton explosion caused by the meteorite that fell over the Russian
city of Chelyabinsk in February.
Although the meteorite measured only a few meters in diameter, scientists
estimated that the initial explosion was comparable in power to a nuclear bomb.

A very bright fireball over southern Poland - 18 Apr 2013
"On Tuesday evening, a very bright meteor appeared over southern Poland." said
Mariusz Wisniewski from the Comet and Meteor Workshop (PKiM) astronomic
association. April 16, 2013 at 22:26 the sky over the Polish-Czech-Slovak border
was illuminated by a very bright fireball. The fireball has been recorded by
many fireball stations in the Polish Fireball Network and also by stations in
the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. An analysis of these recordings is in
process. Preliminary estimates lead to the conclusion that this was a very long
phenomenon. It was recorded over a distance of nearly 250 km. High-speed entry
into the atmosphere and the height at which the fireball vanished exclude a
possibility of finding any meteorites.

Was the West, Texas Explosion a Meteorite Impact? - 19 Apr 2013
The whole world seems content to assume that, because the Texas explosion two
days ago occurred at a fertilizer factory, it must have been fertilizer that
caused the explosion. The problem with that theory is that the factory in
question did not stock the commonly used fertilizer, ammonium nitrate, which is
a solid, prone to exploding (with the proper ignition source) and is widely used
by farmers and bomb makers (both the legal and illegal kinds). What the factory
did stock was anhydrous ammonium, a gas, that is less volatile and, when
ignited,
less likely to explode with such force as seen at the West plant. For this
reason, all mainstream media reports that have attempted to explain the
explosion have been forced to refer to ammonium nitrate, despite the fact that
there was no ammonium nitrate at the plant. This historical revisionism has
already infected Wikipedia (no surprise there), where the West explosion
is referred to as having been caused by ammonium nitrate.
Update: As of today, there have been claims that the facility may have also had
270 tons of ammonium nitrate as of December 2012.

Two large fireballs seen in North East - May 1, 2013
With the peak of the Eta Aquarids just a few days away, one might guess these
events are related to the meteor shower, however due to the timing and location
this is not likely. First, both of these fireballs occurred several hours before
the Eta Aquarids radiant had even risen. Secondly the radiants for these
fireballs were no where near the Eta Aquarids radiant. Event 967 which
occurred first, started in the west and headed east , this would place its
radiant on the opposite side of the sky from the meteor shower radiant. The
second event also happened more than 4 hours before the Eta Aquarids radiant had
risen, and this fireball originated in the south west, heading north east,
placing its radiant far from that of the meteor shower as well.

Ursa: Light phenomenon was an exceptionally large meteor - 30.5.2013
Hundreds of people reported a bright light accompanied by a roaring over Finnish
skies three weeks ago.
An unusual light and sound phenomenon that was sighted in Finnish skies in early
May has been confirmed as a fireball, in other words a very bright meteor. The
light was seen on May 8th in parts of southern and central Finland.
The Ursa Astronomical Association estimated on Wednesday that the object was
half a metre long and weighed 50 kilos when it entered the earth’s atmosphere.

not realize you were an astronomer,” and the jovial deputy replied that he was
“just observant.”

Memorial Day Fireballs - 27 MAY 2013
Party goers on the East Coast were graced with two brilliant fireballs last
night. The first bolide (event #1143) entered the atmosphere over north central
PA around 9:05 PM Eastern time and was traveling from the east-south-east to the
west-north-west. . . . While the vectors for the 2nd sighting put the object
much farther south initially it was not clear if this was a separate event or if
a large volume of witnesses reported the wrong time (certainly possible on a
holiday weekend). We have contacted some of these witnesses in an attempt to
confirm the reported time and have verified this was in fact a separate event.

A flaming meteor in the night sky could be seen in Oregon — with reported

OMSI Planetarium Manager Jim Todd told KOIN 6 News the meteor was a combination
of a "fireball and space junk."
Todd said the fireball was visible for 7 seconds. He described it as being “a
minus 10 on the brightness scale,” which according to the International Comet
Quarterly is nearly as bright as the full moon.

the ceiling of a Mercer County business.
It happened sometime late Thursday night or early Friday morning.
They also found an eight-inch by eight-inch hole in the building’s 30-foot high,

The object left a nice dent in the building’s cement floor where it landed, too.

Meteor slams into moon causing explosion - 18.05.13
About 300 lunar impacts have been logged over the years but this latest impact,
from March 17, is considered much, much brighter than anything else observed.
It is understood the space rock left a 20m-wide crater after it slammed into the
Moon's surface at 90,000km/h.
"We have seen a couple of others in the ‘wow’ category but not this bright,"
said Robert Suggs, manager of NASA’s Lunar Impact Monitoring Program at Marshall
Spaceflight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
The blast lasted only about a single second and shone like a 4th magnitude star—
making it bright enough to see with just the unaided eye
