Meteorites fall in central Finland - Jan 7 2012 - A
Parts of a fireball seen in Finnish skies on Tuesday evening have fallen in
central Finland. According to the Finnish astronomy magazine Tähdet ja
Avaruus (Stars and Space), the fireball fragmented, with the majority of pieces
falling near the centre of Jämsä town.
The largest pieces to land on earth weighed about one kilogram, according to
calculations made by the meteorite section of Ursa Astronomical Association.
Snow may have covered signs of the landings. However, meteorite fragments could
still be found.
The meteorites in the vicinity of Jämsä originate in a larger body that entered
the earth’s atmosphere around Narva in Estonia. The velocity of the object was
about 19 kilometres per second, which is relatively low.

Possible Meteorite Discovered In Castro Valley Back Yard - 01/13/2012 -
C
Meteorites plummeting to earth? In Castro Valley?
It wasn't exactly pennies from heaven, but if the smoldering, dark-colored rock
discovered on Mitch Medeiros' property did indeed fall from the sky, it may
fetch the 55-year-old a fortune. If, that is, it's a verifiable meteorite.
While Bella barked in excitement, Medeiros shoveled the rock out of a fresh,
foot-deep hole. It was glowing "like a barbecue coal," he said.
He ran water to cool the jagged charcoal-colored rock, which is about 2 inches
wide and 4 inches long.

Rare fireball meteor caught on camera - 26 Jan 2012,
The skies in Providence were clear on January 19 when a fireball meteor appeared
around 3 a.m.
The camera, mounted on the roof of Observatory rolls overnight automatically and
often records expected meteor showers. But this one was a pleasant surprise.
The cameras captured the meteor as it vaporized into the atmosphere. The video
shows a flash from the meteor, then there's the trail of smoke in the air which
lingers for about 10 minutes after the meteor breaks up.

SIERRA FIREBALL DECODED: -
On Sunday morning, April 22nd, just as the Lyrid meteor shower was dying down, a
spectacular fireball exploded over California's Sierra Nevada mountain range.
The loud explosion rattled homes from central California to Reno, Nevada, and
beyond. According to Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteoroid Envronment Office, the
source of the blast was a meteoroid about the size of a minivan.
"Elizabeth Silber at Western University has searched for infrasound signals from
the explosion," says Cooke. "Infrasound is very low frequency sound which can
travel great distances. There were strong signals at 2 stations, enabling a
triangulation of the energy source at 37.6N, 120.5W. This is marked by a yellow
flag in the map below."
"The energy is estimated at a whopping 3.8 kilotons of TNT, so this was a big
event," he continues. "I am not saying there was a 3.8 kiloton explosion on the
ground in California. I am saying that the meteor possessed this amount of
energy before it broke apart in the atmosphere. [The map] shows the location of
the atmospheric breakup, not impact with the ground."
"The fact that sonic booms were heard indicates that this meteor penetrated very
low in atmosphere, which implies a speed less than 15 km/s (33,500 mph).
Assuming this value for the speed, I get a mass for the meteor of around 70
metric tons. Hazarding a further guess at the density of 3 grams per cubic
centimeter (solid rock), I calculate a size of about 3-4 meters, or about the
size of a minivan."
"This meteor was probably not a Lyrid;

Humongous exploding fireball in sky probably a meteor, say scientists
(+video) - April 23, 2012
SPACE.com's Denise Chow quotes Bill Cooke, the head of NASA's Meteoroid
Environments Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., who
estimated that the meteor was moving at about 33,500 mph, weighed more than
150,000 lbs., and was roughly the size of a minivan. The energy released by the
meteor as it entered the atmosphere was equivalent to about a fourth of the
energy of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, he said.

Fireball spotted in Peru sky - May 20, 2012
Arequipa, Peru–On May 17, Thursday, someone shot video of a strange object that
looks like a fireball.
The strange fireball was seen in the sky in Arequipa, Peru and caused great
surprise for onlookers wondering what it was.
Strange enough, this isn’t the first incident with fireballs or meteoroids in
Peru.
In September 2007, more than 600 were reported sick after a meteoroid landed.
And in August 2011 a suspected meteor streaked across the sky over the city of
Cusco in Peru.

- LAURA'S DOWNPOUR OF METEORITES JUST
'MONTHS BEFORE' THE 'BIG ONE'?
Mirror, mirror, on the wall....
July 5, 2001
MM:? Can you show Laura so she can describe to us, the catastrophic situation in
our future, our near future?
Laura
A:? It seems as though it will be a progression.? Like the beginning of rain,
when the first few big, cold drops fall; and then a pause followed by a few more
drops; and then, a downpour.
MM:? Describe what you are seeing?
Laura
A:? I see rocks - but they aren't very large.? They are like the size of your
fist.? Just a few.? And they make something of a stir.? An uproar.? People will
be excited... very upset.? It looks like just two - two small rocks.? And then
nothing else happens for awhile, and then they forget about it.? It all dies
down.? And then, a third, a fourth, a fifth and a sixth - and maybe even a
seventh... isolated events, or so it seems.? Still small.? And then, a big one.?
All this will go on over a period of months.

Meteorite shower accompanied by huge blast-like sounds hit Katol region,
India - MAY 31, 2012
"The phenomenon of balls of fire shooting from the sky accompanied by huge
blast-like sounds was witnessed by many last Tuesday evening (May 22,
2012) around 5 p.m. The shower was travelling in the eastern direction and
is the first such meteorite shower recorded in the Vidarbha region of
Maharashtra," - Bharat Adur, head of Akash Ganga Centre for Astronomy (AGCA),
Thane.
Adur said that the meteor shower was accompanied by earth tremors measuring 2.1
on the Richter Scale, but it is not clear whether the cumulative effect of the
meteorites falling created the quake or it was a coincidence (that the meteorite
shower and earthquake occurred simultaneously).

Scientists to probe Nagpur meteorite shower - May 27 2012.
Adur said the GSI's Deputy Director-General (Central Region) Binok Kumar and
three other scientists have collected small samples of the meteorites for
scientific studies and now, the Mumbai team will travel there for its own
independent studies.
"They have confirmed that the pieces are indeed meteorites and this will add to
the challenges before us after their physical, chemical analysis and age would
be determined using radioisotope methods," Adur said.
One of the samples recovered from Lakshmi Nagar in Nagpur measures 9.5x9x9.5 cm.
Weighing nearly 700 gm, it is believed to have caused a 8x7x10 cm void in the
earth.
According to Adur, the pieces belong to a huge mass of around 30 metres in
diameter which could have fallen from a travelling asteroid and entered the
earth's atmosphere.

Meteor shower in Indian district - 09-07-2012
At around 5:15 a.m., the spectacular event, which lasted a few seconds, was
marked by sparks in the sky, said eye-witnesses from the Sarkarpara area of
Jalangi.
Meteors hit the ground like bullets, said local observers, who, driven by
curiosity, followed the direction of the meteoric spark and found the spot
struck by meteors at a jute field near the Indo-Bangla border.
Jalangi Block Development Officer Prasenjit Ghosh visited the spot and filed a
report to the district magistrate who has asked for the help of an expert team
to examine a chunk of solid rock, around 5 kilogram, found at the spot.

Based on the information I received, at least six houses were affected because
of this meteorite shower…only stony iron meteorites have such a huge impact
Adur said that the meteor shower was accompanied by earth tremors measuring 2.1
on the Richter Scale, but it is not clear whether the cumulative effect of the
meteorites falling created the quake or it was a coincidence (that the meteorite
shower and earthquake occurred simultaneously).
Director of the Petrology Department, G Suresh has opined from a preliminary
check that the black colour pieces recovered belong to a ‘stony meteorite’ and
are rich in silicate minerate with minute quantities of iron and nickel. One of
the samples recovered from Lakshmi Nagar in Nagpur measures 9.5 x 9 x 9.5 cm.
Weighing nearly 700 gm, it is believed to have caused a 8x7x10 cm void in the

Residents witness meteor - June 22, 2012
Several residents reported seeing an unidentified flying object – later
identified as a meteor – fly or fall over Salida at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
One Chaffee County resident, Sharon King, said she saw a glowing bright white
light in the sky while sitting on her porch. King told The Mountain Mail
Thursday that she at first thought it was the glimmer of an airplane, until she
saw the bright red tip. “I watched it arch and fall to the ground,” she said.
Wingert said he and other firefighters checked the recreation area but found no
signs of smoke. His concern was that a piece of the meteor could potentially
start a wildfire. One of his firefighters saw the meteor “clearly go past the
horizon,” Wingert said. He said people reported the size of the meteor to be
smaller than a house and larger than a vehicle.
One claimed the tail was about 2 miles long, Wingert said.

Fireball sighted over Gloucestershire - 23 Jun 2012
He feared the turquoise object was a meteorite heading for a populated area, so
called the police.
"It was the size of a wheelbarrow, 2,000ft in the sky and travelling faster than
a fighter jet," he said.
"It seemed to be on fire as it had an orange tail behind it. There must be some
kind of logical explanation, maybe it was a meteor. It definitely wasn't a
Chinese lantern or weather balloon."
Rob Burgess, of Cheltenham, reported a sighting at 11.47pm on the same night. It
has been logged on international astrology website, Meteorite News. He saw a
bright white object moving from left to right, followed by a trail of light
before moving behind a low dark cloud.
